May 2011 Newsletter

The April showers that would have brought May’s flowers were not a distant memory, but a flat-out aberration.  The dry conditions have made the spring transition and green-up difficult but the grounds crew is doing a super job of keeping playing conditions great at both locations.  Everyone take note that “Mothers’ Day” is Sunday, May 8th and without our Moms, no one would be enjoying the great game of golf, or life, for that matter.  Remember, please pay close attention to the Newsletter, for if it does not rain soon, we will be assembling for one huge rain dance party!!

Pool Opens

The pool will open on Saturday, May 7th for swimming.  There will be NO lifeguards on duty until Memorial Day Weekend which is Saturday, May 28th.  The pool hours with lifeguards on duty will be from noon to 7:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday.  The pool will be closed on Mondays for maintenance.  Please remember that all members and their guests must register inside the club house before entering the pool area.  If you have any questions regarding pool parties or any activities involving the pool area, please call the club.  Thank you!

Tennis News

Both tennis leagues are in full swing!  On Saturday morning, May 21st, at 9:30am, the PCC will host a Ladies’ Fun Tennis Play Day.  Come out for a smashing good time of Doubles fun and cool down with brunch and a drawing for a fabulous tennis prize.  The cost for this event is $10 a person.  All skill levels welcome!  Please sign up for the action at the pro shop or contact Stephanie Jackson at 210-365-0138

Course Update

Dry, windy and humid are, unfortunately, the course conditions that have persisted for the last three months.  Your grounds personnel have been working diligently to keep the courses at Pleasanton and Floresville in the best possible playing conditions.  We all could benefit from some of Mother Nature’s much needed rain.  However, until that time occurs we must all do our part.  Stay on the cart paths as long as you can while riding and remember to fix all ball marks and put sand in your divots.  We have fertilized the entire course at River Bend and we will be fertilizing the course at Pleasanton the first part of May.  You may have noticed some discoloration on the greens at both courses.  This is normal this time of year.  The process of transition is occurring.  The winter overseed we planted in October is dying and the Emerald Bermuda is slowly coming out of its dormancy.  We will be verticutting the greens to remove the dying winter grass and applying fertilizer and iron to encourage the new Bermuda growth.  By the end of May, you will notice the Emerald Bermuda growth will be thicker and greener on both the fairways and greens.  A good rain would greatly accelerate this process.

Farm Bureau Scramble

Farm Bureau will hold their annual Scramble at Pleasanton Country Club on Sunday, May 15th at 1:00 pm.  There will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.  If you are interested in playing in the scramble you may call Lloyd House at 210-420-2610 or call the Pleasanton Pro Shop at 830-281-3486.
